Tinubu slams NLC’s strikes, calls for dialogue to ensure national stability

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, during the inauguration of Lagos Rail Mass Transit Red Line, voiced his objections to the frequent strikes orchestrated by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC). Addressing the strained relationship between the government and Labour, President Tinubu denounced the four strikes that occurred within nine months of his administration. He emphasized the need for the NLC to engage in constructive dialogue, highlighting that it is not the sole representative of the people.

The President’s remarks came amidst the NLC’s recent two-day nationwide protest over the escalating cost of living. Despite efforts by government officials and security agencies to deter the protest, the NLC proceeded with peaceful demonstrations in Abuja, Lagos, and several state capitals. However, the Trade Union Congress (TUC) opted out of the protest, acknowledging the government’s fulfillment of significant aspects of the previously signed agreement.

President Tinubu criticized the NLC, led by Joe Ajaero, for delving into partisan politics and urged them to abstain from disruptive activities. He emphasized the importance of patience and urged the union leaders to support national peace initiatives unless their actions are strictly non-political.

Ajaero’s political inclinations have not been concealed, as he reaffirmed the NLC’s involvement in political affairs, citing the Labour Party (LP) as a platform for labor representation. He underscored the necessity for political leaders to prioritize workers’ rights and engage with labor unions on key issues, including minimum wage adjustments.

President Tinubu’s call for restraint and dialogue underscores the ongoing tensions between the government and labor unions, urging stakeholders to prioritize national stability over disruptive actions. As the discourse continues, the focus remains on fostering constructive engagement to address the concerns of workers while maintaining socio-political harmony.
