Manchester City have countered claims by Real Madrid presidential candidate and businessman Enrique Riquelme that striker Erling Haaland has a release clause that could see him leave to join the La Liga giants this summer.

The Premier League outfit was responding to claims made by the Spanish businessman during an interview on El Hormiguero on Wednesday night.

The 37-year-old, who will be contesting the Real Madrid presidency against the incumbent, Florentino Pérez, this weekend, had promised during the programme to sign both Haaland and Rodri from City.

He said: “What I commit to is the promises I have made about the two players (Haaland and Rodri). If I am president of Real Madrid and I fail to keep any of them, I have signed a notarised guarantee.”

Riquelme added: “Haaland has a clause in his contract and wants to play for Real Madrid.”

Responding to the claims, Man City issued a statement insisting there is no contractual clause that could see the Norway international leave the Etihad this summer.

They added that they are weighing up legal options regarding the false narrative and the use of their “player’s image” in this context.

The English club wrote: “The stories which have emerged from Spain regarding the future of Erling Haaland are false. There is no chance of this happening and there is no contractual clause to enable it.

“We are considering legal action for the use of our player’s image in this context.”
