Kano responds to Ganduje’s advocacy for one party rule in Nigeria, selectively citing China’s system

Abdullahi Ganduje’s  recent advocacy for a one-party rule in Nigeria, citing China, has elicited a sharp response from the Kano government which noted that China also executes corrupt politicians with hands caught in the cookie jar.

Sanusi Tofa, Director of Press to the Kano State Government, took to his official Facebook page to share a post that challenges the position of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Chairman.

Original post: “China runs a one party system & it works for them ~ Ganduje”

Tofa’s reaction: “China also executes corrupt politicians & it works for them very well…. ~ Author unknown”

Tofa did not mention Ganduje directly beyond quoting him, yet the implication has drawn attention from political observers who view it as a critique of both the proposal of the former Kano Governor and his record in office.

Ganduje, who previously served as Kano Governor, recently made headlines for suggesting that Nigeria should adopt a one-party system, citing China’s model as effective.

During his tenure as Governor, he was embroiled in a high-profile corruption scandal after a series of videos published by Daily Nigerian allegedly showed him receiving cash bribes from contractors in United States dollars.

The videos, which went viral in 2018, sparked public outrage and legal battles that lasted for years.

The latest Kano government’s response highlights Ganduje’s selective comparison and raises questions about accountability.

Two of the commenters on Facebook reacted to the development as follows:

Mubarak Aminu Hamisu

“It always makes me laugh when members of Kwankwasiyya Movement mock Ganduje over corruption, because none of you know Kwankwaso better than Ganduje does.

“Only that your principal is better at covering it than Ganduje. Remember Kwankwaso is currently having a corruption case with EFCC. So, Kwankwaso and Ganduje are two siTdes of the same coin when it comes to corruption.”

Sadeeq Mahmud Abdurrahman

“In Nigeria, we have hidden monsters who secretly collect two billion naira monthly for what we don’t know.”

Kwankwaso gets raps from Bichi

Former Secretary to the Kano State Government (SSG), Abdullahi Bichi, has accused the government of approving a monthly payment of N2 billion for former Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso – an action he claims he could not support.

Bichi said his refusal to endorse the move led to his removal from office.

The claim adds a new layer to the political discourse between Kano’s current leadership and its predecessor, amid wider national debate on governance models and democratic values.
