Top contender to the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) presidency, Navy Commodore Omatseye Nesiama (rtd) has pulled out.
In a statement on Thursday, the former AFN technical Director gave reasons for his actions which had to do with timing and the Will of God.
“After a deep prayerful reflection and careful consideration, I have decided to step back from the race for the AFN Presidency for now. I remain hopeful and faithful that, if it is God’s will, I may have the opportunity to serve in this role in the future’
Nesiama also alluded to the fact that after much reflections, the current landscape has made it more uneasy for him to launch forward.
“Serving others has always been at the heart of my journey. While I do not claim to be perfect, I strive every day to be the best version of myself, and I believe my track record reflects this commitment.
When I first stepped forward, I felt a clear calling to bring about meaningful and positive change in Nigerian athletics.
“However, through ongoing consultations, deep self-reflection, and a strategic assessment of the current landscape, I have come to realize that the timing [both spiritually and practically] is not yet right. I also sense that the environment may not be fully prepared for the style of leadership I hope to offer, though this is difficult to fully express here.”
He noted that “Perhaps my path is meant to unfold differently, in alignment with God’s greater plan.
It is important to me that I do not cause disruption or division”
According to the World Athletics (WA) International Technical Official ( ITO) “My intention has always been to support what is best for all stakeholders, rather than pursue personal ambitions. Therefore, I yield to divine wisdom, trusting that only God knows the fullness of time, and choose to step back with humility and hope.
“In the coming years, I will focus on continuous self-improvement and seek opportunities to contribute at the international level. Nevertheless, I remain just a call away, ready to support the sport whenever needed”
“To the next crop of Nigerian track and field administrators, athletes, and stakeholders, I offer my best wishes. May our leadership and competition be with passion, integrity, and excellence.”
He thanked his teeming supporters for their loyalty and support over the years.
“To my loyal supporters and well-wishers, thank you for your understanding, unwavering faith and encouragement. Please look beyond this moment and trust—as I do—that when the time is right, my commitment and dedication will shine through,” he said.
