Former Super Eagles captain Joseph Yobo has tipped Fulham midfielder Alex Iwobi to break the current record of most appearances for the Nigerian senior male football team, saying he could possibly don the jersey more than 130 times.
He backed the 30-year-old playmaker to achieve the feat recently while speaking with ESPN ahead of the upcoming international friendlies.
Iwobi is only the fourth Nigerian player to reach 100 caps. He achieved the landmark in June during an international friendly against Portugal.
Following the encounter, he joined Yobo, Vincent Enyeama, and Ahmed Musa as the only Nigerian centurions.
Musa currently holds the appearance record with 111 caps, but Yobo believes Iwobi will match the record and eventually surpass it.
“I wouldn’t be surprised to see Alex getting to 130 or 130-plus because he’s still very active,” said Yobo, who was Nigeria’s first centurion.
He went on to state that, barring injuries, Iwobi will continue to play for the team and perform very well.
He added: “He’s still performing at the highest level. You always pray and hope you don’t get injured because these things can derail you.”
