‘We will never forget,’ Nigerians mark five years of #EndSARS, Lekki Toll Gate killings
By Habiba Kaita
The phrase “We will never forget” is currently trending on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), across Nigeria on Monday, October 20, 2025, as citizens remembered the victims of the Lekki Toll Gate shooting.
Thousands of X users shared posts, photos, and videos from the 2020 #EndSARS protests, marking the fifth anniversary of the #EndSARS protests and honouring those who lost their lives and demanding justice that has yet to come.
That day, peaceful protesters gathered at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos and demanded an end to police brutality.
Protesters waved the Nigerian flag and sang the national anthem to demand justice and change. But on the evening of that day, soldiers began shooting at the crowd.
Many were injured with some individuals losing their lives. The event caused an outrage both in Nigeria and around the world, marking that day as a reminder of the country’s brutal suppression of dissent.
As the anniversary is being held, social media has once again become the main space for remembrance. Hashtags like #EndSARS, #LekkiMassacre, and #20October2020 flood X (Twitter).
For most Nigerians, 20.10.20 is not just a date, it is a reminder of the price paid in the fight for justice and the ongoing call for a safer, fairer Nigeria.
