Liverpool manager, Arne Slot has attributed his team’s defeat to Crystal Palace in the Community Shield to poor defending.

He made this known while speaking to reporters after Palace won an error-strewn shootout 3-2 at the Wembley on Sunday.

The Reds took the lead through debutant Hugo Ekitike, before Jean-Philippe Mateta equalised from the penalty spot.

Jeremie Frimpong also scored on his first competitive appearance for Liverpool, but Ismaila Sarr levelled the score late in the second half to take the game to penalties.

While explaining the reason his team lost the encounter, Slot said Liverpool’s attack is much better than it was last season.

He, however, added that the Premier League champions now concede more goals.

“We created more chances against a team that is so compact.

“But on the other hand, we conceded two goals which we did against [Athletic Club]. And we conceded a couple more against Milan. That is something we need to do better,” the Dutch tactician said.

Also speaking after the defeat, Liverpool captain, Virgil van Dijk, said the club must sign new players.

According to the Netherlands international, the Reds need to replace  Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez, after losing the duo this summer.

“Well we just lost Darwin, he went to Saudi [Arabia ] and we lost Lucho, obviously he went to Bayern,” Van Dijk told talkSPORT on Sunday evening.

“I think there is always room for an attacker in order to strengthen us so let’s see what the window brings in terms of the balance of the team.”

Diaz and Nunez left Liverpool and joined Bayern Munich and Al-Hilal, respectively this summer.
