Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking a significant political realignment in the South-South region.

Vice President Kashim Shettima led a powerful APC delegation to Yenagoa on Monday for the governor’s official induction into the ruling party.

Also present at the ceremony were Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Imo State Governor who is also chairman of the Progressives Governors Forum, Hope Uzodimma; Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, and Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno.

The event drew massive crowds as party loyalists thronged the venue, waving party flags and chanting victory songs to welcome Diri into the APC fold.

On October 15, 2025, Diri announced his resignation from the PDP but did not reveal his next move though it was rumoured he would be joining the APC.

Diri’s move adds to the growing list of PDP governors who have crossed over to the ruling party this year, including Oborevwori of Delta, Eno of Akwa Ibom, and Peter Mbah of Enugu.
