British pundit and former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has argued that reigning English Premier League (EPL) champions Arsenal are unlikely to defend their title next season.

The Red Devils legend made this known on the latest episode of The Good, The Bad and The Football podcast.

Arsenal garnered a total of 85 points to beat their nearest challengers, Manchester City, who managed 78 points, to win this season’s EPL title.

The feat means the Gunners finally won the league trophy for the first time in 22 years, after finishing as runners-up on three consecutive occasions.

Despite this, Scholes, while speaking on Arsenal’s chances of retaining the title next season, said they are not a “brilliant team” that could go on and “dominate” the English league.

According to him, at best, the North London outfit will qualify for the Champions League by finishing in third or fourth position.

He, however, tipped his former club, Man United, and Liverpool to challenge for the title, adding that the change of manager at Man City takes them out of the equation.

Scholes said: “I think Manchester United will have a chance under Michael (Carrick), if they do some good business.

“Liverpool, I expect them to go again. Man City have a good time, but they will have a new manager.

“People are expecting Arsenal to go and dominate. I just don’t see that. I’m struggling to see a brilliant team that will go on and dominate.

“I don’t think it will be a massive surprise if Arsenal finish third or fourth.”
