Dangote: I don’t want to be called Africa’s richest man, I want to create wealth for others

Businessman Aliko Dangote has said he no longer wants to be described simply as the “richest man in Africa,” but rather as the “wealthiest man in Africa,” as he aims to create wealth for others.
Dangote made the remarks on Monday, September 14, 2026, at the official launch of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery Initial Public Offering (IPO) on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX).
He commenced the event by sounding the ceremonial gong on the NGX trading floor, marking what was described as the first time a refinery has been listed for public investment in the 66-year history of Nigeria’s capital market.
Speaking at the event, Dangote said the IPO was not merely about selling shares but represented an opportunity for Nigerians and Africans, in general, to participate in what he described as a transformational chapter for the continent’s economy.
“Today, we are not merely offering shares. We are offering an opportunity to participate in the transformational chapter of not only Nigeria’s economy, but also Africa’s economy.”
Dangote also expressed gratitude to his family, particularly his three daughters, for their support and understanding, acknowledging that the expansion of his business empire had reduced his family time.
He stated that while his daughters might not fully enjoy the wealth generated from his business, he assured that his grandchildren would benefit from his legacy.
Dangote further encouraged Nigerians to deepen the capital market and promote wider prosperity through ownership.
“Together, let us deepen our capital market. Together, let us create prosperity through ownership. Together, let us build a stronger Nigeria. Together, let us ensure prosperity for Africa,” Dangote remarked.
The Sales offer, which commenced on September 14, 2026, comprises 4.1 billion new ordinary shares priced at N525 each with a minimum subscription of 10 shares
