The Department of State Services and Nigerian Police Force on Wednesday not only dispersed the #RevoltuionNow protesters in Abuja and Osogbo but arrested some of their leaders.
The security officials chased away both protesters and journalists from the scenes of the protests.
Although the leader of the movement, Omoyele Sowore, was not among the demonstrators today but a member of the protest movement, Mr Pelumi Olajegbensi, called for a change in government, insisting there is need for political revolution.
He accused the Federal Government of failing to protect Nigerians, citing insecurity, growing unemployment, amongst other issues, and asked Nigerians to speak against unending killings in the country.
“There is a need for us as young people who are interested in the future of this country to raise our voices so we can be heard.
“Nigeria is currently in a state of emergency, our country has been reduced to a state of surrender; we cannot continue like this.
“Today, we are concerned as young people that a lot of our youths graduate from tertiary institutions and are unemployed because there is no job for them, this has increased the rate of crime in the country.
“Our demand today is for a conscious political revolution, a need for change in leadership”, he stressed.
Mr Olajegbensi also called for a revamp in various sectors of the economy.
The protesters converged on the Berger roundabout in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) after a combined team of police, army, airforce and some paramilitary personnel were deployed on Wednesday morning to prevent the protest, earlier scheduled for Unity Fountain.
Abuja leader of #RevolutionNow, Deji Adeyanju, said the police attacked the #RevolutionNow members at the Unity Fountain and arrested them.
In Osogbo, Osun State, another leader of the protest movement, Olawale Bakare, and others were arrested by DSS operatives during a peaceful protest.
Bakare and other members of the movement were arrested on Wednesday morning while they were addressing journalists at a popular junction, Ola-Iya.
The protesters who were armed with placards with several inscriptions against bad governance, lack of infrastructure, extrajudicial activities and others were arrested in the presence of policemen.
Other members ran away from the scene to avoid arrest.
