Procession of the sea worshippers
By Abraham Nwankwo
Over seventy in number, they file past,
Radiating a continuum of majestic aura;
Men, women, children: bare-footed, bare-chested, mute.
READ ALSO: The gods are angry
Only white skirt-like wrappers round the waist:
Fallen breasts of older women swaying;
Semi-spherical ones of maidens turgid and tempting.
White and red beads round adult necks;
Who toss white and yellow powder into the air,
And all chant to praise the sea goddess.
Then they climb into a steaming ship,
Unmoored, it sails off and is lost to sight;
Into the heart of the sea’s misty wilderness.
