However, in a video of the court wedding which trended online afterwards, the registrar was heard explaining the legal implications of their vows to the couple.

Facing Peller and Jarvis, the registrar asked: “If any of you goes against the rule, he or she is guilty of an offence called bigamy. It is a punishable offence with a minimum of five years’ imprisonment, with no option of a fine.

“Should I proceed?”

Responding, Peller, who was obviously taken aback by the statement, raised objections, asking why a marriage born out of love should have anything to do with prison.

He queried: “This is marriage, love. What has love got to do with imprisonment?”
