Peter Obi met with Atiku Abubakar and other Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) big wigs on Monday in his quest for the “emergence of a Nigeria that works,” the Labour Part (LP) has clarified, in response to speculation on why its last year’s presidential candidate forayed into the turf of another opposition party.
Obi in Abuja visited Atiku, PDP candidate in the same election, and two other PDP grandees – former Jigawa Governor Sule Lamido, and former Senate President Bukola Saraki.
Atiku later tweeted to say it was his “honour and privilege” to host Obi. Atiku had been canvassing for months for Obi and others to join forces with him ahead of the 2027 ballot form a mega party that will dislodge Bola Tinubu from the Villa on Election Day.
Obi was Atiku’s running mate on the PDP presidential ticket in 2019, and he remained in the party until June 2022 when he joined the LP and became its presidential candidate in 2023. The All Progressives Congress (APC) won the election in both cases.
Details of the meetings on Monday have not been made public but it was learnt the need for the opposition to form a common front in the run up to 2027 topped the discussions.
“The meeting was held behind closed doors but we haven’t been briefed,” Atiku’s Media Adviser Paul Ibe told Vanguard.
However, Obi’s Media Aide Yunusa Tanko explained the visits were inspired by “the state of the nation and the plight of the poor.”
Tanko added: “Mr. Peter Obi has continued to live up to his expressed commitment to the peace and progress of the nation.
“His abiding devotion is to the emergence of a Nigeria that works for all its peoples and where the people are quickly pulled out of poverty.”
