Nesiama lauds shot put star Oji, draws comparison to Chukwuemeka’s era

Former Technical Director of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) Commodore Omasteye Nesiama rtd, has praised Nigeria’s rising shot put star Jessica Oji following her recent achievements on the international stage.
Nesiama, who also served as a military intelligence officer, described Oji’s performances as impressive and congratulated the young athlete for her steady rise in the event.
The veteran athletics administrator admitted that Oji’s emergence at the senior level reminded him of a former Nigerian shot put great Vivian Chukwuemeka, whom he had hoped would attain a similar position during her illustrious career.
“I am impressed and congratulations to the young lady. It’s a position like this I wanted to find Vivian Chukwuemeka at the senior level that she never got to achieve,” Nesiama said.
He also commended fellow Nigerian thrower Chukwuebuka Enekwechi and coach Gabriel Opuana for the progress made by the country’s throwing programme.
Reflecting on his experience before the competition in Glasgow, Nesiama recalled watching the athletes during training and noted the strong bond between the coach and his athletes.
“I followed them to the training pitch at Glasgow before the Games started and one could see the chemistry between the throwers and indeed the two shot putters. Gabriel Opuana told me that the two throwers were in the best shape of their lives. It has shown,” he added.
Nesiama expressed optimism that the athletes would continue on their upward trajectory, offering prayers for even greater success in future competitions.
He expressed confidence in the future of Nigerian throwing events and he said these athletes will sustain their impressive development and continue bringing honours to the country.
“May the upward trend continue in Jesus’ name. Amen,” he concluded.
