Mercy Aigbe argued that her son’s devotion to his spouse should never eclipse the duty owed to the woman who raised him.

Movie star and filmmaker Mercy Aigbe has made it clear that she expects her son to prioritize her over his wife when he eventually gets married, insisting that she earned it.
The Nollywood thespian made this known recently during a live video session with her children and one of their friends.
According to Aigbe, who was unapologetic in laying out her expectation, she deserved to come first in her son’s life given the sacrifices she made as a mother.
She added that while she has every intention of welcoming her son’s wife warmly into the family and treating her like her own daughter, she must understand that she ranks higher in the pecking order.

To drive home her point, Aigbe made a vivid example involving the purchase of a luxury Birkin bag, stating that if both she and her daughter-in-law were to request the bag, her son would be expected to fulfil her wish first, without question.
‘I don’t understand what you people are trying to do with my son; he is my son, and I gave birth to him. He is going to take good care of his wife because she will be like a daughter to me. If his wife and I ask him for a Birkin bag, he would buy it for me before his wife. I breastfed him,’ Aigbe claimed.
She further asserted that her bond with her son is simply irreplaceable, pointing to the physical and emotional labour of childbirth and nursing him.
While admitting that she expects her son to be a devoted husband, she maintained that devotion to a spouse should never eclipse the duty owed to the woman who raised him.
