Mbappe leapfrogs Messi in race for World Cup Golden Boot​

Mbappe netted his eighth goal of the tournament as France defeated Morocco 2-0 in the quarter-finals to qualify for the next round.

​France captain and Real Madrid striker, Kylian Mbappe, has shot ahead in the race for the Golden Boot at this year’s World Cup.

​The 27-year-old netted his eighth goal of the competition as Les Bleus defeated Morocco 2-0 in their quarter-final fixture on Thursday evening.

​Mbappe had earlier missed an opportunity to put France ahead in the 28th minute when his penalty was parried away by Morocco’s goalkeeper, Yassine Bono.

​France beat Morocco 2-0, become first country to qualify for World Cup semi-finals

​He, however, made up for his mistake in the 60th minute by curling a sublime effort past the North African shot-stopper.

​Ousmane Dembele added a second six minutes later to take the game beyond Morocco and ensure France’s progress into the semi-finals.

​With Mbappe’s latest goal, he has overtaken Lionel Messi. While both are currently tied on eight goals, Mbappe leads courtesy of having more assists to his name.

​Norway forward, Erling Haaland, who has scored seven times at the tournament, follows closely behind the duo.
