LP rubbishes defections to APC as dishonourable, insists genuine LP members can’t be induced by “monetary form of politics”

Defections by opposition politicians to the All Progressives Congress (APC) is dishonourable because they are fuelled by financial inducements and other personal gains, says the Labour Party (LP)

LP Cross River Publicity Secretary Ofem Ujong made the point in reaction to an APC chieftain Paul Ifere who posted on social media at the weekend that the entire LP structure in the state defected to the APC alongside former LP senatorial aspirant Daniel Asuquo.

The state APC at the weekend celebrated some members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), People Redemption Party (PRP), and LP who defected to the ruling party this month, among them Asuquo, a three-term member of the House of Representatives who contested for Senate on the platform of LP in 2023.

“To set the record straight, on 7 April 2025, … Daniel Asuquo, a.k.a Dansuki, tendered his resignation letter to our state chairman, Patriarch Ogar Osim, citing the state publicity Secretary for the records. These were duly acknowledged,” Ujong said in a statement.

“We want to enlighten that none of the 18 chapter chairmen and state executives of our party defected with Asuquo or any other decamped in the state.

“We challenge Ifere Paul to provide any name of LP officials that defected yesterday or before now. We’re very committed to a better Nigeria.”

Ujong insisted that LP state officials are committed to the party and cannot be induced by “monetary form of politics, which is almost becoming a tradition for opposition members in Nigeria.”

He reiterated that the APC has destroyed the national economy and inflicted pains and poverty on Nigerians.

“Such an inducement is not an option for LP chapter or state executive committee members,” he stressed.
