Nigeria Democratic Congress governorship candidate Aminu Gwarzo has selected Mustapha Kwankwaso as his running mate for the 2027 Kano state election, a spokesman said Monday.
Ibrahim Shuaibu, Gwarzo’s spokesman, said the decision followed consultations with party stakeholders and aimed to strengthen the party’s chances ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Mustapha Kwankwaso is the son of Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, national leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement and a former Kano state governor.
Shuaibu described Mustapha Kwankwaso as a committed party member whose selection would consolidate the party’s support across the state.
“The governorship candidate of our great party, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, has selected Mustapha Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as his running mate for the 2027 governorship election in Kano State,” Shuaibu said.
He added that the choice reflects the party’s commitment to unity, inclusiveness and effective representation.
His emergence is expected to strengthen the influence of the Kwankwasiyya movement within the NDC as preparations intensify for the 2027 elections, according to party officials.
Gwarzo, a former deputy governor of Kano state, emerged as the NDC’s governorship candidate following consultations among party leaders and stakeholders.
