Kano bans DJs from playing ‘immoral songs’

-

Kano wants to become Nigeria’s morality capital by not only enforcing criminal behaviours but also religious and cultural ‘dont’s’

The Kano State government has doubled down on its enforcement of strict acceptable moral code for people in the State.

The government announced that it has banned men and women from swimming in the same pool and even says DJs would be regulated so as not to corrupt the people with ‘immoral songs.’

Among the moral code to be enforced is a ban on smoking shisha. For some, this is commendable since studies have shown that shisha contains carbon monoxide and other toxic agents known to increase the risks for smoking-related cancers, heart disease, and lung disease.

Also, to be banned are the entry of children into hotels, another positive, some people will say.

These laws are to be enforced by the state’s Task Force on Tourism Development Levy, according to a report by Sahara Reporters.

The Chairman of the Committee, Baffa Dan-Agundi, stated these laws following a meeting with hotel and event centre owners.

He said, “Part of our term of reference is to stop underage children from entering hotels without their parents, banning shisha smoking, swimming between men and women in the pool, lesbianism, and gay practices.

“The committee will further oversee the activities of DJs at wedding ceremonies and event centres. All events centres should be closed by 11 pm.”

In December last year when a Nigerian, Shatu Garko was announced as the Miss Nigeria, the Kano Hibah board said her parents would be arrested for allowing their daughter to participate in the ‘Unislamic’ Miss Nigeria Beauty pageant.

Shatu Garko became the first woman to win the Miss Nigeria Beauty pageant adorning a hijab. But the Hisbah Board was unimpressed with the 18-year-old, from Kano, a predominantly Muslim community.

Kano State Hibah commander Haruna Ibn Sina. Had said the parents of Shatu Garko, may be arrested during an interview with the BBC Pidgin.

He said they would be interrogated for allowing their daughter to participate in the Miss Nigeria beauty pageant for 2021, describing it as “illegal” and contrary to Islamic beliefs.
