Professor Emmanuel Bankole Oladunmiye has stated that the role of graphic design in technological development cannot be overemphasised, describing it as a vital tool of communication and a means of political power in Nigeria.

Oladunmiye made this known while delivering the 187th inaugural lecture of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), held at the Obafemi Awolowo Hall, Akure.

The Don explained that graphic design plays a significant role in shaping social narratives, influencing public opinion, and driving national development through technology and creativity.

Prof. Oladunmiye is the first Professor of Graphic Design in the Department of Industrial Design at Federal University of Technology, Akure and this is first inaugural lecture in the South-West region of Nigeria in the field of graphic design.

According to him, the discipline goes beyond aesthetics, serving as a strategic instrument for advocacy, political engagement, and economic advancement.

He emphasised that in today’s digital age, nations that harness the power of visual communication tend to achieve faster technological growth and stronger democratic participation.

He therefore called for greater investment in the creative industry and the inclusion of design-driven innovations in national development plans.
