Nigerian athlete Chukwuebuka Enekwechi has put the country on the world map after claiming gold in the men’s shot put at the prestigious Znamensky Memorial in Russia.
The 33-year-old dominated the event from the early rounds, gradually putting pressure on the other competitors on the field.

Enekwechi eventually sealed the victory with a best throw of 21.27 metres, after none of his rivals was able to surpass the mark throughout the competition.
Juan Vazquez Gomez of Mexico threw a distance of 20.13 metres to finish second and claim the silver, while Romania’s Andrei Rares Toader won the bronze after registering 20.02 metres to come third.

Enekwechi won the gold after beating Vazquez Gomez and Toader, who came second and third respectively.
Although the second and third positions were keenly contested between the two, Enekwechi’s superior distance ensured there was never any doubt about the winner of the gold medal.
The win comes at a significant point in the athletics calendar as the Nigerian continues his build-up to major international championships later in the season.
His commanding performance at the event also shows the consistency and control that have become hallmarks of his international outings.
