EFCC frees Mama Pee, Akah after questioning over alleged naira abuse
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has released two prominent members of the Obidient Movement, Peter Akah and Oruche Precious, widely known as Mama Pee, after hours of interrogation over allegations of naira abuse.
The two supporters of former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi honoured the anti-graft agency’s invitation at its Abuja headquarters on Wednesday. They were released shortly after midnight but directed to return on Thursday as investigations continue.
Chidiebere Mark, popularly known as Justice Crack, said in a post on X that he accompanied the pair to the EFCC office after they arrived around 1 p.m. on Wednesday.
“It was a very long day. They were eventually released at around 12:00 a.m. and were asked to return the following day, 16th July 2026,” he wrote.
Their absence for several hours had triggered anxiety among supporters on social media after reports surfaced that the duo were being interrogated by the EFCC.
Reacting to the development, human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong, who is representing Akah and Precious, confirmed that the invitation was connected to allegations of naira abuse.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Effiong explained that his clients informed investigators that the money referenced in the allegations was not genuine Nigerian currency but prop money used solely for entertainment.
He wrote, “I can confirm that they were invited by the EFCC to appear on 6th July 2026, to offer clarifications over allegation of abuse of the Naira by separate invitation letters dated 24th June, 2026.
“We wrote to the Commission to reschedule the meeting to Wednesday, 15th July, 2026 since our clients were not available on the originally scheduled date.
“We arrived at the Commission with Peter for Nigeria and Mama Pee on Wednesday and met with the investigators,” he said.
“After cooperating with the Commission, our clients were released and we departed the EFCC headquarters. We will be returning today in furtherance of the investigation.
“During the interrogation on Wednesday, which took considerable time, the Commission acted professionally.
“Our clients clarified that what was referenced were prop money for entertainment and not naira notes. They are in high spirits and appreciate the concerns expressed by Nigerians regarding their safety.”
