Afrobeats star, songwriter, and music producer David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has applauded the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate for the upcoming 2027 election, Peter Obi, after he called for a peaceful and credible gubernatorial poll in Osun.
He hailed the former Anambra State governor on Friday morning in a post shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) page.
On Thursday, Obi took to the same social media platform to demand a free and fair election during Saturday’s governorship election in Osun State.
In a statement titled: “OSUN STATE: LET THE PEOPLE CHOOSE, LET PEACE PREVAIL”, the NDC chieftain warned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, and other political actors against standing in the way of the will of the people.
Obi wrote: “As we approach the upcoming election in Osun State, I wish to draw the attention of Nigerians, our institutions, political actors, the diplomatic community, international observers, and all friends of Nigeria across the world to the solemn responsibility before us.
“Osun belongs to its people. Therefore, I call on the Independent National Electoral Commission, security agencies, political parties, candidates, government institutions, civil society organisations, religious and traditional leaders, the media, and every stakeholder to act with the highest degree of neutrality, professionalism, and restraint.”
He added: “The people of Osun must be allowed to vote freely, safely, and without intimidation. Their votes must be counted transparently, protected faithfully, and announced according to the genuine will of the electorate.”
Obi further noted that to improve the image of the country, it is important for the election to be devoid of rancour, adding that Nigerians and the rest of the world are watching.
He continued: “Let Osun demonstrate to Nigeria, and indeed the world, that political competition can be intense without degenerating into violence; that disagreement can exist without hatred; and that power can change hands through ballots rather than blood.
“Nigeria is watching. Africa is watching. The world is watching.”
Reacting to the post, which has since trended online, Davido thanked Obi for lending his voice to the call for a peaceful and credible election in Osun State.
Sharing the former governor’s post on his page, the singer wrote: “Thank you so much Your Excellency.”
