Côte d’Ivoire earned a priceless three points in their 2026 World Cup opener against Ecuador at the Philadelphia Stadium, United States, after scoring a superb 90th-minute winner.
It was an even game until the goal, though the South Americans did not have a shot on target until the 68th minute, when Gonzalo Plata forced Ivorian keeper Yahia Fofana into a save.
Ecuador, however, hit the woodwork three times but could not find a breakthrough, as John Yeboah and Alan Minda struck the bar in the first half.

Veteran striker Enner Valencia also hit the post from a tight angle in the second half for Sebastián Beccacece’s side.
It looked like Ecuador, whose 19-game unbeaten run under manager Beccacece appeared safe, had done enough to stifle Côte d’Ivoire’s attack before Amad Diallo found the winner.
The Manchester United winger opened his left foot to divert the ball into the corner with a stunning finish after a powerful run from Wilfried Singo.
The victory gives the West African side a huge chance to qualify from Group E — which also includes Germany and Curaçao — and reach the knockout stages for the first time in their history.
