Fernandes was given the chance to level when Brentford captain, Nathan Collins dragged Bryan Mbeumo back inside the area.
After a delay of almost five minutes, which included a video assistant referee red card check against Collins and Brentford making two substitutions, Fernandes’ low effort was turned away by Caoimhin Kelleher.
Brentford wrapped it up deep in stoppage time when Mathias Jensen drove a high shot past United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir from the edge of the area.
Prior to the game, Brentford coach, Keith Andrews had warned Man United striker, Mbeumo, who left the west London side during the summer transfer window to expect a ‘not nice reception on the pitch’ during the clash.
Speaking during his pre-match briefing, he said, “Bryan rightly should get a really good reception. Having said that, I don’t want us to give him a nice reception on the pitch.
“Yes, we know all about him…we’ll hopefully try to nullify that by making an afternoon that he doesn’t enjoy.”
