Kola Oyewo, who started his acting career in 1964 with the Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group, recently celebrated his 80th birthday.

Nollywood actor, dramatist, filmmaker and academic, Dr Kola Oyewo, has passed away at the age of 80.
His death was announced on Friday by fellow thespian, Kunle Afod, via a post shared on his official Instagram page.
In his tribute, Afod described Oyewo as one of the most influential figures in Nigeria’s theatre and film industry.
Taking to his verified handle, he wrote: “Kola Oyewo has taken his final bow.
“His remarkable talent, timeless performances, and immense contributions to the Nigerian theatre and film industry will never be forgotten. His legacy will continue to inspire generations to come. Rest well, sir. Your work lives on.”

Oyewo, who celebrated his 80th birthday in March 2026, started his acting career in 1964 with the Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group.
He later gained further prominence and recognition across the African theatre scene following his portrayal of Odewale in Ola Rotimi’s play, ‘The Gods Are Not to Blame’.
During a career that spanned more than six decades, Oyewo featured in several notable productions, including ‘Saworoide’, ‘Sango’, ‘Koseegbe’, ‘Super Story’ and many other movies.
He also taught at Obafemi Awolowo University, Redeemer’s University and Elizade University.
