Switzerland and Monaco striker, Breel Embolo broke the hearts of many from his country of birth, Cameroon, after scoring the only goal of a hard-fought World Cup Group G opener at the Al Janoub Stadium in Qatar.

Barrel, who has now scored 7 goals for Switzerland in his past 11 appearances, refused to celebrate after finishing off a slick Swiss attack shortly after half-time.

The Indomitable Lions will consider themselves unfortunate to have lost the match after putting up a brave and enterprising display.

However, with Brazil looming in the group, Embolo made sure he secured a valuable three points for Switzerland after finishing off an assist from Jordan Shaqiri in the 48th minute.

The Swiss had more chances to double their advantage but Andre Onana stopped an effort from Ruben Vargas, while Embolo and Haris Seferovic were also denied by last-ditch defending.

Cameroon next play Serbia on Monday, in a must-win game if they are to stand any chance of progress beyond the group stage, Switzerland, on the other hand, will face the group favourites, Brazil on the same day.
