APEX safety programme begins in MMA

Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA) Lagos is hosting the Airport Council International (ACI) Airport Excellence (APEX) in Safety Programme.

 

The scheme, an initiative of the Airport Council International (ACI), aims to enhance safety at airports worldwide, commenced on Monday May 18, 2015.

Murtala Muhammed airportFederal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) Managing Director, Saleh Dunoma, explained that “the APEX in safety programme is essentially a safety review – gap analysis of airports’ infrastructure and operational procedures benchmarked against ICAO standard and recommended practices.”

 

Activities expected to take place during the programme include on-site assessment of airports safety to ascertain compliance with international best practices, identification of gaps as well as drawing up an action/implementation plan to address all vulnerabilities.

The searchlight will also be beamed on aerodrome physical characteristics, safety management system, emergency procedures, wild life hazard management, night and day operations, better service delivery, safer improved passenger experience, among others.

 

The visit will help establish a safety culture among airport workforce and stakeholders.

 

APEX in safety programme was launched in September 2011 with a pilot safety review conducted in Lome, Togo.

 

Since then, five other safety reviews have been conducted in Africa, Asia Pacific, Europe, and Latin America.
