Manchester United manager, Ruben Amorim on Wednesday night admitted that Grimsby Town were the better side in their second round Carabao Cup clash.

He made this known while speaking with reporters after the League two outfit knocked the Premier League giants out of the competition.

It appeared the Red Devils had rescued themselves in the nick of time after finding themselves two goals down following a truly awful first-half display, with returning goalkeeper Andre Onana at fault for Grimsby’s second.

Goals from Charles Vernam and Tyrell Warren in the 22nd and 30th minutes respectively sent the home crowd into raptures at the Blundell Park.

However, Man United pulled one back through substitute Bryan Mbeumo before Harry Maguire powered in a header in the final minute.

The game then went straight into penalties, and after 11 spot-kicks between the two teams, Mbeumo smashed his effort against the bar, sending Grimsby into the third round.

While analysing the match, Amorim acknowledged that a team with pedigree can lose a match.

He, however, added that Grimsby won because they were “the only team on the pitch.”

He said, “I think the best team won, the only team that was on the pitch.

“The best players lose because one team can win against any group of players, and I think the team and the players spoke really loud today, so that’s it.

“We lost, the best team won.

“The way we started the game without any intensity, all the idea of the pressure, we were completely lost and that’s why I think they spoke really loud.”
