Fulham midfielder Alex Iwobi has praised his team’s unity and resilience after he was voted Man of the Match in the Super Eagles’ hard-earned 2-1 victory over the Barea of Madagascar.
He hailed the team’s performance following the encounter at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Friday night.
The Super Eagles came from a goal down to claim maximum points in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations Matchday 1 clash.
Iwobi set up debutant George Ilenikhena for Nigeria’s equaliser in the 45th minute, after Kari Eshan had given the visitors the lead in the 16th minute. Moses Usor then completed the impressive comeback in the 65th minute to hand the Super Eagles all three points.

During the encounter, Iwobi—who was in action for the entire duration of the match—combined well with captain Wilfred Ndidi in the middle of the park. The game marked the Fulham playmaker’s 101st appearance for the three-time African champions.
Following his Man of the Match performance, the 30-year-old midfielder emphasised the importance of mental strength, team unity, and resilience.
Iwobi said: “We always try to give our best. Sometimes we make mistakes, but overall we push ourselves to perform, no matter the conditions.
”We knew it wasn’t going to be easy. Other teams prepare well and wait for their chances, but when you stay positive and there is unity, you stay mentally strong.”
Iwobi will now hope to carry his impressive form into Nigeria’s next game against Guinea-Bissau on Tuesday.
