Yobe commissioner Goni Lawal dies in auto crash

Lawal was on his way to Kano State after attending the funeral of his friend when he had the accident that cost him his life

Yobe State Commissioner for Youth, Sports, Social, and Community Development, Goni Lawal aka Buggon has died in a car accident.

The former member of the House of Representatives died on Tuesday evening along Damaturu-Kano Highway.

Lawal was on his way to Kano State after attending the funeral of his friend, the Director of Finance and Supply of the Upstream of the NNPC, Hassan Gambo, in Damaturu, Yobe State when the accident occurred.

Governor Mai Mala Buni’s spokesman Babagana Mai-Modu confirmed the incident to Channels Television.

He said the commissioner’s corpse has been deposited at the mortuary of the Yobe State University Teaching Hospital Damaturu.

Mai-Modu added that two of Lawal’s friends who were with him during the accident, are responding to treatment in one of the health facilities in the state.

Funeral prayers will be said at the Yobe State Central Mosque at 11:00am on Wednesday.

Spokesperson of the ministry, Tijjani Ciroma, told the News Agency of Nigeria that the 57-year-old was on his way to Kano to board a flight to Abuja for an official function.

Lawal was appointed commissioner in 2019.

He was a member of House of Representatives from 2007 to 2015.

Lawal is survived by two wives and many children.
