Wabara’s PDP BoT says it’s taking over leadership of the party after Supreme Court ruling

The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced taking over of the party’s national leadership with immediate effect.

The announcement was made in a press release issued on Thursday, April 30, 2026, by the BoT Chairman, Senator Adolphus Wabara.

According to the statement, the BoT’s intervention is backed by the provisions of the PDP Constitution (as amended in 2017), particularly Section 32 (5), which places the responsibility of leadership on the Board as the second highest organ of the party in the absence of a functional National Working Committee (NWC).

This development follows today’s Supreme Court judgment, which invalidated the PDP’s National Convention held on 15th–16th November 2025 in Ibadan, Oyo State. That convention had produced the Kabiru Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee.

The apex court also upheld the suspension of Senator Samuel Anyanwu (National Secretary), Hon. Umar Bature (National Organizing Secretary), and Barr. Kamaldeen Ajibade (National Legal Adviser).

According to the BoT chairman, as a direct consequence of the judgment, all actions taken by the suspended officials—including the appointment of Abdulrahman Mohammed as Acting National Chairman, the formation of the National Caretaker Working Committee, and the outcome of the March 29, 2026 National Convention in Abuja—have been declared illegal, null and void.

The BoT stated that it is stepping in as an immediate constitutional remedy to foster genuine reconciliation, stabilize the party, and return it to political health.

The Board further announced that an emergency meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) will be convened soon, in line with Section 31 of the PDP Constitution, to appoint an Interim National Working Committee that will pilot the party’s affairs at the national level and ensure compliance with the timelines stipulated in the Electoral Act for the 2027 general elections.

In the interim, all staff of the PDP have been directed to resume duties at the National Secretariat under the leadership of the BoT.

The BoT commended the resilience of PDP Governors, the National Assembly caucus, National Ex-officios, State Chairmen, Youth and Women Wings, and other organs of the party for standing firm during this challenging period.

It urged all party leaders and members to set aside personal and group interests, embrace genuine reconciliation, and work together as one family for the sake of the party and the millions of Nigerians who look to the PDP as a beacon of hope.

“The PDP has suffered enough,” the statement noted. “The real victims of this unfortunate episode are the Nigerian people. The time has come for us to sheathe our swords, make the necessary sacrifices, and chart a new course for lasting peace and unity in the party.”
