VIDEO: Massive crowd in Kano as Kwankwaso defects to ADC

A mammoth crowd turned out on Monday for a rally to receive former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso into the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Supporters of Kwankwaso, clad in their signature red caps, turned the venue — Gidan Kwankwasiyya on Miller Road, Bompai — into a sea of colour.
Kwankwaso formally resigned from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and joined the African Democratic Congress on Monday, March 30, 2026.
Other notable politicians in Kano are expected to dump the NNPP and the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the ADC. Prominent among them are Senator Rufai Sani Hanga, representing Kano Central, and Dr Nasiru Gawuna, the Kano APC governorship candidate in the 2023 election.

Among the prominent national figures who arrived in Kano for the reception ceremony are ADC National Chairman Senator David Mark, National Secretary Rauf Aregbesola, 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi, former House of Representatives Deputy Speaker Emeka Ihedioha, and several others.
Kwankwaso’s defection to the ADC is viewed as significant because of the massive cult-like following he commands. In the 2023 presidential election, when he flew the NNPP flag, he polled nearly one million votes in Kano alone. His total votes nationwide in that election stood at about 1.4 million.
