Obi, David Mark, Tambuwal, Amaechi, other ADC heavyweights in Kano to receive Kwankwaso

Top leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) are trooping into Kano to formally receive former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso into the party.

Kwankwaso resigned from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to join the African Democratic Congress on Monday, March 30, 2026.
Other notable politicians in Kano are expected to dump the NNPP and the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the ADC. Notable among them are Senator Rufai Sani Hanga, representing Kano Central, and Dr Nasiru Gawuna, the Kano APC governorship candidate in the 2023 election.

Among the prominent figures who have arrived in Kano for the reception ceremony are ADC National Chairman Senator David Mark, National Secretary Rauf Aregbesola, 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi, former House of Representatives Deputy Speaker Emeka Ihedioha, and several others.

Kwankwaso’s defection to the ADC is considered significant because of the massive cult-like following he enjoys. In the 2023 presidential election, when he flew the NNPP flag, he polled nearly one million votes in Kano alone. His total votes nationwide in that election stood at about 1.4 million.
