United States citizens in Nigeria have been counselled by their home government to adhere to the July 31 deadline to resolve their visa issues or risk stiff penalties from the Nigerian government.
“US citizens currently in Nigeria who have overstayed their visa are strongly encouraged to fix their stay through the amnesty portal before July 31, 2025,” the US Embassy advised in a statement on its website.
Failure to do so could “result in significant financial penalties and long-term restrictions on re-entry to Nigeria,” it added.
Nigeria’s Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo already announced that foreigners who overstay their visas will now face stricter measures, including daily fines and long-term bans from re-entering the country.
A daily fine of $15 is set by the ministry, effective May 1.
There is an amnesty to sort out outstanding issues without paying any fines, a period that ends on July 31.
