Manchester Uniteds’ new coach Erik Ten Hag has been told he must first assess the technical crew at Old Trafford before his proposal to bring in Steve McClaren as his assistant manager will be considered.

The former Ajax coach was on Thursday announced as the new gaffer of The Red Devils after agreeing to stay at the club for the next three-year – with the option of a fourth.

Ten Hag is expected to take over from the current manager Ralf Rangnick who succeeded Ole Gunnar in the middle of the 2021/2022 season.

Ten Hag, who will be coming to United with his existing coaching crew at Ajax, also wants to add Steve McClaren who has knowledge of the Manchester club to his backroom staff.

However, according to the Telegraph, Man Uniteds’ board has shown ‘resistance’ to the idea and there is uncertainty over whether Ten Hag will get his way.

The board wants the Dutch coach to look at the existing staff at Old Trafford before making any decision on bringing in another staff member who knows the club to the Theater of Dreams.

Meanwhile, McClaren worked under former Man United manager Sir Alex Ferguson for two years between 1999 and 2001

He was also Ten Hag’s boss at Dutch club, FC Twente, where the duo won the Eredivisie title in Steve McClaren’s second season.
