Uber had, prior to this development, exited Tanzania in February 2026, after stopping operations in Ivory Coast last year.

Global ride-hailing giant Uber has announced plans to wind down its operations in Africa’s most populous country, Nigeria, and the East African nation of Uganda with immediate effect.
The multinational transportation and technology company made this known on Wednesday, 2 September 2026, in a statement sent to the email addresses of its customers.
According to Uber, the “difficult” decision was reached after reviewing its business:
“We are writing to share some difficult news. After a thorough review of our business, we have made the tough decision to wind down our operations in Nigeria, effective 2 September 2026,” the ride-hailing company said.
Uber, which noted that it launched its services in Nigeria’s commercial nerve centre, Lagos, in 2014, thanked its customers in the country for using its platform over the years.

It added: “Since we first launched in Lagos in 2014, it has been an absolute privilege to be a part of your daily life connecting you with independent transportation providers.
“Whether it was a morning commute, a ride to see loved ones, or exploring the city, thank you for trusting the platform to connect you to a driver to get you there safely. We know this may cause disruption to your routine, and we sincerely apologise for the inconvenience.”
Uber went on to state that its immediate priority is to support drivers, riders, and local team members through the transition.
It further promised that its help centre would be available until 23 September 2026 to assist customers with any final account queries.
Over the last year, Uber has also pulled out of Ivory Coast and Tanzania. The latest announcement means Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, and South Africa are the only African countries in which the firm now operates.
