Manchester United boss, Erik ten Hag, has said Harry Maguire is good enough to play for the Red Devils but must reproduce his England form at the World Cup at the club level to reclaim his shirt.

Maguire has made only one Premier League start for Manchester United since August since losing his place at the centre-back to Varane, a situation which left his place in the 2022 World Cup squad in serious jeopardy.

However, Gareth Southgate kept faith with the 29-year-old as his first choice central defender alongside Manchester City’s John Stones and he rewarded his manager with a string of assured performances in Qatar.

The United defender started all five of England’s matches in Qatar before their quarter-final exit at the hands of France.

Speaking on Maguire’s chances of breaking back into the United’s first team, Ten Hag said: “I’ve been asked many times. It’s clear he is good enough to play at the highest level.

“He has, for England, good games almost all the time. He had a period in Manchester where he performed badly.

“We want him to bring it on the pitch for Manchester United. I expect from him, the team knows what they expect from him. If he does that, he will be a great player for us,”

Maguire after his exploits at the World cup will go on a short break before joining the United squad for the second part of the season.
