Super Falcons beat South Africa 1-0 in first leg of Olympics qualifier

Super Falcons with the win, will now take on Banyana Banyana in the second leg of the qualifying tie on Tuesday in Pretoria, South Africa

The Super Falcons of Nigeria edge past  Banyana Banyana of South Africa in the first leg of the Paris 2024 Olympic qualifier played at the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja on Friday evening. 

The home side started the brighter of the two sides and were duly rewarded when Noko Matlou brought down Chinwendu Ihezuo in the box.

Nigeria’s team captain, Rasheedat Ajibade stepped forward to convert the spot kick, beating the impressive Swart  with two minutes left in the first half.

Super Falcons then missed opportunities to increase their tally in the second half through a combination of poor finishing and Swart’s smart saves.

South Africa also had their chances, but Chiamaka Nnadozie made good saves to preserve the clean sheet for the nine-time African champions and ensure the match ended 1-0.

The winners of the two legged encounter will earn one of Africa’s two tickets to the women’s football event of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games later this year.
