Popular Afrobeat singer, Seun Kuti, has secured the services of prominent Human Rights Lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), following allegations that he assaulted a police officer.

Falana, who confirmed this to PUNCH on Sunday, argued that his client has enough evidence to prove his case, saying the singer and the police have crossed paths severally in the past.

He said, “I am his lawyer and he has briefed me. He certainly has evidence. This is not the first time he is dealing with the police.”

The Senior Advocate of Nigeria while also reacting to rumours that Seun Kuti is evading arrest disclosed that the embattled singer would turn himself in on Monday.

“He is going to report himself to the police tomorrow morning. There is no problem at all.” Falana added.

It all started when a viral video of the son of the legendary Fela Anikulapo Kuti slapping a police officer on Third Mainland Bridge made the rounds on social media on Saturday.

The musician later in a social media post on his page, said he acted in self defence after his family was put in harm’s way by the police officer.

After that incident, the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, ordered the arrest and prosecution of Seun Kuti.

Speaking on the incident, the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adéjọbí said: “The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, has ordered the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command to arrest Afrobeat singer, Seun Kuti, who was captured on video assaulting a police officer in uniform.

“The IG has equally ordered a speedy and full investigation into the remote and immediate cause(s) of the assault and prosecution of the suspect accordingly.”

Falana and the singer’s family have come a long way. The lawyer represented his father, Fela, during his agitation against the Nigerian government, which resulted in his arrest in 1993.
