Senior lecturer dies in Edo hotel apartment during encounter with 21-year-old lady
Matthew Uwuigbe, a senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, has died in a hotel room in Ekpoma, Edo State, after an encounter with a 21-year-old sex worker.
The police in Edo are investigating the circumstances surrounding his death and have arrested three people in connection with the incident.
The police spokesperson in Edo, Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the development to journalists on Tuesday.
Ms Ikoedem said the command received a report at about 8 p.m. on 5 October that Uwuigbe had lodged at the hotel and engaged the services of the woman, identified as Angela Jacob.
According to her, the lecturer later sent Ms Jacob out to purchase water for him.
“When she returned, she found him lying dead in the room,” the police spokesperson said.
Ms Ikoedem said the hotel owner, the manager and the sex worker had been arrested and were assisting the police with the investigation.
She said Uwuigbe’s body had been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary.
The police have not disclosed the cause of death, and the command has not indicated that the sexual encounter itself caused the lecturer’s death.
The university’s spokesperson, Mike Aladenika, confirmed that Uwuigbe was an AAU staff member but stressed that the incident occurred off campus.
“We are not denying that he is our staff, but whatever he did and what happened, it is his private life,” Aladenika told PM News.
He also said the woman involved was not a university student.
“The girl in question is not our student, and everything happened outside our institution,” he said.
The death follows a series of recent reports involving people who died suddenly in hotels or private accommodation after meeting companions.
In July 2025, Olabode Abimbola-Ibikunle, a lecturer at Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyigba, Kogi State, died at a hotel while in the company of a 22-year-old student, per Premium Times report.
Police said the student alerted hotel staff after the lecturer collapsed following their encounter. He was taken to a hospital where staff pronounced him dead. The police said an autopsy was being conducted to establish the cause of death.
In July 2026, the police in Jigawa State arrested a 20-year-old woman following the sudden death of a 60-year-old man at a hotel in Dutse.
Police said the man had checked into the hotel with the woman and developed severe breathing difficulties shortly after ordering a meal.
Detectives recovered a substance suspected to be a sexual enhancement supplement, among other items, while the woman was held to assist the investigation.
