Former Manchester United striker, Wayne Rooney, has argued that his former club ought to have signed Italian goalkeeper, Gianluigi Donnarumma instead of Belgian international, Senne Lammens, describing the decision as “panic buy”.

He made this known recently on the BBC podcast while analysing Man City’s 3-0 thrashing of local rivals, Man United.

According to Rooney, not using Lammens during derby defeat meant he should not have been signed at all.

Erling Haaland netted a second half brace after Phil Foden’s first-half header gave the home side the lead.

Speaking after the loss, Rooney expressed disappointment over the performance of the Red Devils, saying he was surprised by their display.

He also questioned why Man United opted for Lammens instead of a more experienced goalkeeper like Donnarumma.

After he was banished by PSG, Donnarumma was linked with a move to Manchester United but the 26-year-old ended at the Etihad for just £26m.

Amorim kept faith in Altay Bayindir while his £18m deadline-day signing Senne Lammens sat on the bench.

Faulting the decision, Rooney described Lammens as a panic buy, saying it was a ‘concern’ that the manager wasn’t able to throw the Belgian goalkeeper straight in.

Reacting to the loss, he said, “That was a worry as well… you don’t know if that was a panic buy.

“I’ll be honest I don’t know too much about the new goalkeeper, I don’t think many of us have seen much about him. I’ll obviously do some research and have a look.

“But if you’re buying a new goalkeeper and he’s not ready to come in, that’s a bit of a concern.

“Obviously Donnarumma comes straight in and keeps a clean sheet. That’s the big difference and that was my point after the first game of the season when I said United should go and get Donnarumma.”
