Renowned poet Ogundepo dies at 84

Ogundepo, according to his family, contributed significantly to the preservation and promotion of the rich cultural heritage of the Yoruba people.

​Veteran Nigerian poet, writer, and cultural enthusiast, Chief Alabi Ogundepo, has passed away.

​His death was announced in the early hours of Tuesday via a statement signed and made available to the press by his daughter, Dupe Ogundepo-Falana, on behalf of the family.

​According to her, the renowned writer, who was a native of Saki in Oyo State, breathed his last on Monday at the age of 84.

​His family described him as a remarkable literary voice whose poetry and writings reflected his deep appreciation of Yoruba culture, tradition, language, history, and the human experience.

​Dupe further stated that his creative works and public engagements contributed significantly to the preservation and promotion of the rich cultural heritage of his people.

​The statement added, “Funeral arrangements and other details will be announced by the family in due course.

​“The family kindly requests privacy and prayers as we come to terms with this irreparable loss.”

​Dupe also noted, “Chief Alabi Ogundepo may have departed this world, but his voice, his poetry, and the memories he created will continue to live on.”
