Remi Tinubu begs Burna Boy, others to stop acquiring Rolls-Royces, help poor Nigerians

​Remi Tinubu made the appeal during the launch of the national community food basket in Kogi State, saying the “burden on government [is] huge”.

Oluremi Tinubu, Nigeria’s First Lady, has called on Afrobeat stars such as Burna Boy, Davido, Asake, and others to acquire fewer luxury items and assist the government in helping poor citizens.

​She made the appeal on Saturday during the launch of the national community food basket in Lokoja, the capital of Kogi State.

​Referencing the charity work embarked upon by their Senegalese-American counterpart, Akon, Remi Tinubu urged the ace music stars to start helping poor Nigerians through foundations.

​While urging them to focus less on purchasing luxury cars like Maybachs and Rolls-Royces, she added that the gesture is important because the burden on the Federal Government is too huge to bear.

​Speaking during the ceremony, Mrs Tinubu said, “We have a lot of wealthy people. But our priorities are different. I want to appeal to the young ones in the entertainment industry. I’ll use a music icon, Akon, who does a lot of great charity work, [as an example].

​“Asake, Davido, the Burna Boys of this world, and all of them. We want to see you with one foundation or the other, helping the poor with your money.

​“The burden on the government is huge. Good cars are good; a Maybach and Rolls-Royce are good, but still you can help.”

​Burna Boy recently responded to critics who faulted his decision to acquire a customised and rare Bugatti at the Afro Nation concert in Portugal.

​Clapping back at his detractors during the show, the ‘Last Last’ hitmaker said, “I buy Bugatti, them ask which road I go drive am—no be today we dey do road like Julius Berger.”
