R&B legend Freddie Jackson dies at 70

​Freddie Jackson, who was originally from New York, began his professional music career in the late 1970s with the California funk band Mystic Merlin.

​American R&B singer Frederick Jackson has passed away at the age of 70.

​His demise was announced by his family on Tuesday via his Instagram account. They stated that he “went home to rest”, without revealing the cause of death.

​The post read: “It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we share the passing of our beloved Freddie Jackson, who went home to rest last night.

​”Freddie was more than a legendary voice. He was a kind, generous soul who loved his fans, his family, his friends, and his music with everything he had. For decades, he gave us the songs that became the soundtrack to our love stories, our celebrations, and our most treasured memories. That gift will live on forever.”

​The family went on to thank everyone who ever sang along, danced, or felt something when Freddie took the stage, assuring them that “he carried your love with him always.”

​The statement added that details regarding funeral arrangements and ways to honour Freddie’s legacy will be announced in the coming days.

​Jackson, who was originally from New York, began his professional music career in the late 1970s with the California funk band Mystic Merlin.

​The artist became a fixture of the 1980s R&B scene with timeless tracks such as “You Are My Lady”, “Rock Me Tonight”, “Have You Ever Loved Somebody”, and “Jam Tonight”.

​He also famously appeared on the classic television sitcom Family Matters, serenading Laura Winslow with “You Are My Lady” during a date with Stefan Urquelle, the cooler alter ego of Steve Urkel.
