PSG knock Aston Villa out of Champions League

PSG went ahead in the 11th minute after Hakimi cashed in on Villa keeper Emiliano Martinez’s mistake.

Aston Villa crashed out of this season’s UEFA Champions League (UCL) despite beating Paris St-Germain (PSG) 3-2  on a dramatic night at Villa Park.

Villa were attempting to overturn a 3-1 deficit to reach the last four of the completion but their hopes looked in tatters when they were two goals down inside the first half-hour.

The visitors went ahead in the 11th minute after Achraf Hakimi cashed in on Villa keeper Emiliano Martinez’s mistake.

PSG then doubled their advantage in the 27th minute when Nuno Mendes scored a second goal for the French side. .

Despite needing four goals to stand a chance, Unai Emery’s men launched a magnificent response to put a hugely talented PSG side on the rack.

Youri Tielemans pulled one back after 34 minutes with a deflected shot before a second half of pure theatre unfolded in front a frenzied Villa Park.

Villa struck twice in two minutes to spark hopes of a remarkable revival, John McGinn scoring from 20 yards after 55 minutes before defender Ezri Konsa put them ahead on the night after fantastic work by Marcus Rashford.

PSG, however, managed to regain a measure of composure to hold on and qualify on 5-4 aggregate score line.

The Ligue 1 club will now face Arsenal or Real Madrid in the semi-final.
