Popular American city, Boston, declares March 2 ‘Burna Boy Day’

Boston honoured Burna Boy in recognition of his “performances and advocacy works.”

Ace Nigerian Afrobeats singer and songwriter, Damini Ogulu has added another feather to his cap after the city of Boston in Massachusetts, United States, honoured him by declaring every  March 2nd as “Burna Boy Day”.

The declaration was announced in a letter signed by Ruthzee Louijeune, the city councilor.

According to the document, the Last Last’ crooner was honoured in recognition of his “performances and advocacy works.”

It also stated that Burna Boy, through his music, has been “challenging stereotypes about African artistry” by popularising Afrobeats to the world.

The singer was also praised for “opening doors for aspiring artistes and inspiring conversations about social justice, equity, and representation”.

The documented read inter alia: “Boston’s commitment to recognizing and celebrating culture and diversity is evident in the range of cultural events, festivals, and community initiatives that showcase the city’s multicultural landscape and:

“Whereas, Burna Boy’s legacy serves as a reminder of possibility, reminding us to continue amplifying voices that have long been silenced or overlooked, now, therefore be it resolved: That March 2, 2024 is designated Burna Boy Day in the City of Boston.”

Burna Boy gained fame in 2013 after releasing ‘Like to Party’, the lead single from his debut album ‘L.I.F.E’.

With a string of awards and accolades, the singer has solidified his status as a leading artiste out of Africa.

In 2021, he set a record in Nigeria after his fifth album ‘Twice As Tall’ won the ‘Best World Music Album’ category at the Grammys.

He also secured three nominations at the 2024 Grammy Awards.

Prior to the honour by the American city,
Burna Boy had held so many soldout concerts in Boston.
