Polish referee, Marciniak, to officiate World Cup final

Marciniak was in charge of the group game between France and Denmark, he also officiated Argentina’s win over Australia in last 16

Szymon Marciniak made history after he was appointed by the world football governing body, FIFA, to officiate the 2022 World Cup final between World champions, France and South American champions, Argentina on Sunday.

With the development, he became the first Polish referee to take charge of a World Cup final.

Marciniak will not be the only Polish official on parade on the day, he will be assisted by his compatriots Paweł Sokolnicki and Tomasz Listkiewicz.

His appointment put paid to the possibility of two English Premier League referees, Anthony Taylor (who is still in Qatar) and Michael Oliver (who was sent home by FIFA), to officiate the finals.  

According to Sports Center, FIFA referee chairman Pierluigi Collina picked the 41-year-old to officiate the game at the Lusail Stadium.

Collina has been impressed with Marciniak’s handling of the matches he has been in charge of in Qatar so far.

The Polish referee is not new to the two teams in the finals, he officiated France’s 2-1 win over Denmark at the group stages and was also in charge of Argentina’s 2-1 win against Australia in the Last 16.
