The Lagos State Commissioner of Police (CP), Adegoke Fayoade, has enlightened Nigerians on their constitutional rights, saying no officer is permitted to beat or search the phone of any citizen.

The police boss made the clarification while answering questions during his visit to Melody FM, 107.7FM, in Lagos.

Fayoade, however, explained that if an officer suspects the owner of a phone, he or she should take the suspect to the cyber section of the police station.

He went on to encourage Nigerians who felt cheated by any police personnel to “report the policeman to his DPO or Area Commander” and approach him if unsatisfied.

Speaking during the visit to the media house, Fayoade said: “If you feel a policeman engaged in corruption or cheated you, kindly report the policeman to his DPO or Area Commander. But if you still feel cheated, please report to me directly. My phone number is open to all Lagosians.

“No police officer has the right to beat citizens. The people are the government’s employers; your taxes support us. Thus, we have to treat you with the appropriate decency.”

He added: “Also, no policeman has the right to search your phone. If a policeman suspects anything on your phone, he will take you to the station. We have a cyber department that is responsible for all that.”
